From a flat in Seacroft to Headingley Stadium, West Yorkshire Playhouse tours Bennett’s much-loved monologues to all 29 Leeds postcodes

Celebrating relationships with communities and organisations across the city, West Yorkshire Playhouse last week (4 – 9 June) performed individual monologues from Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads in 28 Leeds postcodes, with the tour concluding this week at the Playhouse in LS2, the 29th postcode.

Visiting flats in Seacroft and Chapel Allerton, houses in Middleton and Boston Spa, Green Acres Nursing Home and Headingley Stadium to name just a few, the Playhouse toured individual monologues from Bennett’s much-loved collection to say a heartfelt thank you to the individuals, audiences and businesses who have continually supported the theatre ahead of the upcoming capital redevelopment.

West Yorkshire Playhouse Associate Director Amy Leach said “It was a real honour to be welcomed into people’s living rooms to share these stories, and to witness the unique and magical dynamic between performers and audience members that this created. Alan Bennett is one of Leeds’ greatest writers and his Talking Heads are set in homes across the city.

Having performed in 28 of the 29 postcodes of Leeds over the last week, we now head to the 29th, LS2, as Talking Heads becomes the final production in our Courtyard Theatre before redevelopment. We look forward to sharing these iconic plays with a wider audience.”

Actors Vanessa Rosenthal, Marlene Sidaway, Cate Hamer and Chris Chilton, who performed the monologues across the city, will be joined this week on the Playhouse’s Courtyard stage by Flo Wilson and Tina Gray. The final production in the Playhouse’s Courtyard Theatre ahead of the capital redevelopment, Talking Heads plays from 14 – 23 June.
