School Activity at West Yorkshire Playhouse

West Yorkshire Playhouse aspires to build and develop long-term partnerships with Primary teachers and students through a range of creative opportunities offered at the Playhouse and in School settings. The following workshops are available all year round:

Workshops

    • Creative Literacy

      These sessions look at a significant author’s work using drama techniques, literacy support and creative writing tasks to bring the story to life. Why not choose from favourites such as:

      Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach, Michael Rosen’s We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, Ahlberg’s The Jolly Postman, Julia Donaldson’s Room on the Broom, Jacqueline Wilson’s Tracy Beaker

    • Behind the Scenes

      Once Upon a Time… (Character in your Classroom)
      These sessions are led by an actor in role as a famous character from a chosen story. From Traditional Tales, to Ancient Myths and Legends these practical sessions explore classic stories and folk tales with students to complement the curriculum.

          • Max: 30 participants

      Backstage Tours
      Tours can be tailored for groups of all ages. Students discover what it’s like to work in a producing theatre and how productions make it from page to stage.

            • Duration: 50 mins

      Set Design / Costume Workshops
      These two different workshops offer an exciting insight into the design process. Work alongside a professional set designer or visit our wardrobe department to create mood boards and costume designs,

            • Suitable for: KS3, Design students, GCSE/BTEC Production Arts students
            • Duration: 2 hours per workshop
            • Available: All year round

    • Playhouse: Play in a Day

      Brush up your Shakespeare, excavate the Ancient Egyptians, prepare for Arctic Adventure… anything goes.

      These sessions focus on collaboration, teamwork and confidence building, focused on a topic of your choice and culminating in a performance at the end of the day.

      • Max. 30 participants

    • Exploring Costume Workshops

      Delve headfirst into West Yorkshire Playhouse’s fantastic Costume Department to learn all about fashion, clothing and costume. This interactive learning adventure will give students unprecedented access to dress-up and explore within our treasure trove of costumes.

    • Primary Players: Shakespeare Festival 2017

      Now in its fourth year, this exciting in-depth project offers Primary schools the opportunity to work with us in partnership throughout the Spring/Summer term towards a full-scale collaborative Shakespeare production at West Yorkshire Playhouse in July 2017.

      This programme includes six in-school artist-led Shakespeare workshops and rehearsals for your students, alongside tailored support for the teaching of Shakespeare in your curriculum, and professional development training for teaching staff.

      The total cost to take part in this programme is £825+VAT per group.

      This fee allows one class (approx. 30 students) and up to three staff to take part in all aspects of Primary Players: Shakespeare Festival 2017

    • Jack and the Beanstalk Early Years Project

      This project takes students on an immersive journey through the story of Jack and the Beanstalk over 4 in-school sessions to support the following EYFS learning outcomes through a range of media: Listening and Attention, Reading – rhyme and rhythm, Being imaginative, Using mimcry and role-play.

      • Suitable for: Early Years and Foundation
      • Cost: £525+VAT (based on 2 classes participating in x 4 sessions each)
    • Simple Choices…

      This immersive and interactive practical workshop, rooted in a selection of drama and music-inspired techniques, has been created to:

      • Encourage pupils to feel positive about themselves and their surroundings
      • Support and enhance pupils’ awareness and management of their emotions
      • Develop focus and concentration skills
      • Make simple choices that improve health and well-being
      • Help pupils’ manage stress and tension
        • Suitable for: Foundation, KS1
        • Location: In a school or at the Playhouse
        • Cost: £175+VAT
        • Maximum: 30 students (per workshop)

      Booking Tickets and visiting the theatre

      Prices and Discounts
      School prices vary according to each production, the range is listed on each web page. To help you manage your visit we offer one FREE staff seat for every 9 students booked. Schools tickets are only available in limited numbers and for Monday to Friday. You are still welcome to book once this limit is reached, but the standard discount rates will apply.

      Age Recommendation
      Age Recommendation is assessed according to the complexity and sensitivity of Issues, images, sexual references and strength of language used in both West Yorkshire Playhouse Productions and Touring Productions. Any sensitive content is highlighted in our main Brochure but we do encourage Schools to call our Box Office with any specific concerns or questions regarding sensitive material in the Productions.

      Take note…

      We strongly discourage students from taking notes during performances at West Yorkshire Playhouse. Please encourage your students to fully enjoy their theatre experience by focusing completely on the action on stage. They can then jot down any notes immediately after the performance.
