We have a range of volunteer opportunities across many departments here at the Playhouse, including Front of House, Costume Hire and Creative Engagement.

Front of House Volunteers

Alongside our frontline teams; Attendants, Box Office, Bars and Café staff, the Front of House Volunteers play a pivotal role as the public face of the theatre; welcoming audiences and visitors and delivering a first class customer experience. While also ensuring that Health & Safety and licensing regulations are followed.

The Front of House Volunteers report to the Front of House Manager and Duty Managers, who in turn are line managed by the Director of Commercial Operations & Customer Services.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • To uphold the Playhouse’s existing high standards of customer experience.
  • Provide a welcoming atmosphere to all visitors.
  • Assist in ensuring the safety and comfort of members of the public and staff.
  • Ensure the clean and tidy presentation of all of the front of house areas, especially inside the theatre spaces.
  • Assist in dealing with customer complaints confidently, effectively and appropriately.
  • Provide accurate information about the Playhouse, promoting its productions and the other areas of its work, such as Arts Development.
  • To adhere to all fire, Health & Safety procedures to minimise the risk of injury and accidents.
  • To abide by and enforce appropriate licensing regulations.
  • To adhere to the Front of House Staff Rules and Regulations.
  • To contribute to the Playhouse’s active and developing access policy through appropriate understanding of the needs of all visitors, including education/youth groups, deaf and disabled patrons.
  • To carry out any other duties required by the theatre in pursuance of the above objectives.

Key Relationships

The Front of House Volunteers work closely with the other frontline teams under the supervision of the Front of House Manager and Duty Managers. They also come in to contact with many other members of Playhouse staff during performances.

Due to the nature of the role, the Front of House Volunteers will interact with a wide and diverse range of visitors to the Playhouse. Primarily this will be audience members, however the building is open to the public and there are many reasons people may be visiting venue. Volunteers will be expected and prepared to greet and assist everyone with whom they come in contact with.

Person Specification

  • Previous experience of working with the general public.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • First rate customer service skills.
  • Interest in theatre and performance.

Applicants should have the ability to:

  • Work calmly and effectively in stressful situations.
  • Operate successfully in a team.
  • Deal confidently with the general public.
  • Use their initiative and prioritise during busy periods.

Terms & Conditions

Volunteers are asked to work at least one performance a fortnight.
