Alan Bennett was born in Armley, Leeds. From his humble origins as the son of a co-op butcher, he has become one of the UKs most highly regarded playwrights, a distinctive and compelling voice with an undeniable Leeds accent.

This season at the Playhouse we bring together a selection of his work, from full stage plays to intimate and perfectly formed autobiographical memoirs. Enjoy directed by James Brining comes to the Quarry Stage. We present the regional premiere of Untold Stories just seen at The National Theatre and Talking Heads is taken on tour across Leeds

To truly immerse yourself in the work of the extraordinary writer a season ticket is available. For £84 you can get to see four shows for the price of three. For even greater discounts across the season take a look at the My Playhouse scheme.

In addition to these 3 major productions we will present a range of other activities to celebrate and debate Alan's work, including an audience with Alan Bennett, and a co-production of Betty Blue Eyes inspired by Bennett's screenplay a private function.

Enjoy_slide.jpg Enjoy.  Written and set in 1980s Leeds Alan Bennett's darkly comic play is an idiosyncratic examination of northern working-class life. The poetry of everyday life starkly contrasts the bitter reality of old age and the complexity of moving on.
Cocktail_Slide.jpg Untold Stories.  Simple things make the past come flooding back. For Alan Bennett in Untold Stories, it's the hymns of his childhood and a tub of forgotten cocktail sticks found at the back of his parents' kitchen cupboard.

Talking_heads_slide.jpg Talking Heads.  These much loved television monologues are re-imagined for both the stage and beyond. As well as being presented at the Playhouse, we will be taking the plays out to communities aroundLeeds, performing in community and neighbourhood centres across the city.
Betty_Blue_Slide.jpg Betty Blue Eyes.  Exploring how Bennett's work has inspired others we present this co-production - an updated production of Betty Blue Eyes, directed by Daniel Buckroyd. Marrying Alan Bennett's hilarious story with a wonderfully witty musical score that's guaranteed to send you home with a spring in your step.
