About us

Since opening in 1990, West Yorkshire Playhouse has established a national and international reputation, providing both a thriving focal point for the communities of West Yorkshire and theatre of the highest standard for audiences throughout the region and beyond.

The Playhouse regularly collaborates with other major regional producing theatres and companies, recently these have included Rum and Coca Cola (2010) with Talawa Theatre Company and English Touring Theatre; The History Boys (2010) with Bath Theatre Royal; The Caucasian Chalk Circle (2009) with Shared Experience and Nottingham Playhouse; Hedda Gabler (2006) and When We Are Married (2009) with Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse; The Bacchae (2004) with Kneehigh Theatre; The Wizard of Oz (2005), Alice in Wonderland, To Kill A Mockingbird (2006), The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2007), Hapgood, Privates on Parade, Peter Pan (2008), His Dark Materials and The Secret Garden (2009) with Birmingham Repertory Theatre Company; Wars of the Roses (2006) with Northern Broadsides, Flat Stanley (2006) with Polka Theatre; Ramayana (2007) with Lyric Hammersmith and Bristol Old Vic; Casanova (2007) with Told By An Idiot and Lyric Hammersmith and Fast Labour (2008) with Hampstead Theatre.

West End transfers have included: Ying Tong (2004) to the New Ambassadors Theatre; The Postman Always Rings Twice (2005) to the Playhouse Theatre; Peepolykus’ The Hound of the Baskervilles (2007) to the Duchess Theatre; Bad Girls – The Musical (2007) to the Garrick Theatre, Kneehigh Theatre’s Brief Encounter (2007) created with Birmingham Repertory Theatre Company, to The Cinema, Haymarket and Northern Broadsides’ Othello (2009), featuring Lenny Henry, to the Trafalgar Studios. Following the success of the Tony and Olivier award-winning The 39 Steps which was co-produced in 2005, the Playhouse was delighted to work with Fiery Angel once more on their new production of Dial M For Murder (2009).
